Athens
Weaver D's
Soul food chef and cookbook author Dexter Weaver operates this neon-green cinderblock café in downtown Athens, overlooking the Oconee River. The casual, counter-service eatery has a few communal tables topped with red-and-white-checkered tablecloths, as well as a handful of outdoor picnic tables. The walls are lined with posters for locally born bands (and former patrons) such as the B-52's and R.E.M. (who named their 1992 album Automatic for the People after Weaver's now-famous slogan: Delicious Fine Foods - Automatic for the People). Specialties include the fried chicken and pork chops, served with traditional sides like sweet potato soufflé and collard greens.
Insider Tip:
Arrive early if you want to order the daily specials; they often sell out quickly, especially around University of Georgia football games (when the restaurant is even busier than usual).
