Istanbul Ataturk Airport (IST)
Designed to look like Istanbul’s huge, centuries-old, labyrinthine Grand Bazaar with its colorful carnival of domed buildings, arches, and pillars, the newer and smaller Old Bazaar sells high-quality Turkish specialty items—olive oil, dates, halvah (a Middle Eastern sweet made of ground sesame seeds), Turkish delight, beads to counter the evil eye (negative energy or envy directed at those with good fortune), copperware, olive-oil soaps, Turkish tea sets, lanterns, and colorful tiles in traditional Turkish motifs. The duty-free goods are identical to those you’d find in the Grand Bazaar (they come from the same suppliers), but the prices are fixed, and often a better deal.
