Asmalı Mescit
Refik
Istanbul, Turkey
One of the many meyhane-style restaurants in the bohemian Asmali Mescit neighborhood, Refik distinguishes with its cuisine and storied past. A long-time haunt of leftist intellectuals, the walls are covered with photos, newspaper clippings, and memorabilia of the last 50 years. Today, diners pack in for bottles of raki and dishes of Black Sea cuisine like steamed anchovies, sautéed liver, and stuffed cabbage. Live traditional music often accompanies diners, who usually join the song and dance after a few drinks.
Insider Tip:
Make sure to bring a wad of small bills as the musicians often travel table to table for tips.
