Amsterdam

Museum of Torture

449 Singel
Amsterdam, 1012, Netherlands
TEL: 31-20-320-6642

Explore the world of the macabre and marvel at the horrendous means of ancient punishment at this museum, housed in a small, dungeon-esque building where the gruesome, working instruments are on full display. Exposed brick walls, dark and weathered wood floors, and dim lighting create a spooky atmosphere. Framed drawings illustrate how the items would have been used, from classics like the guillotine and rack, to lesser known (but no less imposing) tools of the trade like iron masks used for gagging victims and the Inquisition Chair, which is laden with metal spikes and leather straps that tightened victims to their death.

Insider Tip:

For a lighter mood after the tour, head to the Replay Café for a snack and sit outside to take in the peaceful scenery along the canal.
