L.go F.Ili Spacca 2, Fabriano, 60044, Italy

Eight centuries ago, Amalfi was home to the world’s best papermaking craftsmen, and the trade is slowly being revived in the shops along Valle dei Mulini at the top end of town. The small museum devoted to the art, in an antique paper mill beside a stream, is worth a visit despite its meager displays. The cavernous rooms are enlivened by a staff eager to show how it all worked—and happy to sift screens through the pulp pot to make a wet sheet and even switch on the century-old hydraulic engine at the back of the space so you can watch the stream waters turn the oversize gears.
