Amalfi
Cartiera Amatruda
The Amatruda family has been sifting pulp in Amalfi since at least 1483, and theirs is one of the few remaining outfits in town still hand-making the paper that made Amalfi famous in the late Middle Ages. The shop is a ways up the road past the paper museum, where you can get a good sense of this dying artisan craft before continuing on to Amatruda to purchase a few sheets of history in the form of cream-colored stationery, writing paper, cards, and envelopes made from hand-pressed, uncut cotton or cellulose pages that retain the texture of the felt presses and the ancient watermarks of Amalfi.
