Things to do in Abu Dhabi
Whether you’re looking to take in the emirate’s dazzling religious sights, pristine beaches, or simply indulge in a little high-end boutique shopping, it’s impossible to run out of things to do in Abu Dhabi. Any trip to Abu Dhabi should begin with an immersion in the emirate’s rich religious history and stunning architecture. Visit the snowy-white, sumptuously decorated Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, where up to 40,000 worshippers go to pray. Then tour the palace fort of Qasr al-Husn, Abu Dhabi’s oldest building and the seat of the government until 1966. The Emirates Palace hotel is also worth a visit, even if you’re not staying there. Take in the glittering marble and gold structure and the equally dazzling interior, hung with 1,002 Swarovski crystal chandeliers – and if you dare, visit the ATM machine that dispenses solid gold bars. Or you can browse and purchase fresh fish, produce and meats at some of Abu Dhabi’s traditional souqs (markets), which still exist in the Al Mina area.
Looking for more relaxing things to do in Abu Dhabi? Take a leisurely stroll through the Corniche, the waterfront neighborhood that boasts a Mediterranean-style promenade. It is lined with pristine beaches perfect for a lazy day in the sun – if your hotel doesn’t have a private beach of its own, that is. Stop in at a sheesha café to soak up the local culture (and perhaps sample some sheesha, the flavored tobacco favored in the Middle East) or simply grab a casual bite.
