One of the most anticipated new hotels in the city, the Mondrian SoHo opened its 270 rooms in February 2011. It’s an odd mix of 18th-century elegance and postmodern New Yawk—designer Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz said he was inspired by Cocteau’s 1946 film La Belle et la Bête. There are floor-to-ceiling windows for city views (at 26 stories, it—controversially—towers above the rest of SoHo), marble-clad bathrooms, a vanity–cum–wet bar, curvaceous low-hanging chandelier lamps, and chrome-plated sconces, desks, and bedside tables along vaguely Art Deco lines. Chef Sam Talbot will preside over the contemporary seafood cuisine under crystal chandeliers at Imperial No. Nine restaurant, opening March 1.

Insider Tip:

Even the showers have enormous windows—and while no nearby building is tall enough for anyone to peep in directly, the modest might want to steam up the stall before stepping in.
