Austin may be Texas's capital, but Dallas, or the Big D, embodies many travelers' impressions of the state, where everything is bigger and bolder. When you visit Dallas, there's no shortage of opportunities to see cowboys (and the Cowboys), as well as shopping venues that pile on the glitz and dining venues that pile on the steak. But the city also is a trove of cultural riches, under-the-radar neighborhoods, and luxury hotels. Downtown Dallas is a nightlife mecca, while the West End district is rich with history; Uptown Dallas is a hub for high-class shopping; South Dallas is home to the Texas State Fairgrounds, as well as multiple museums; and hipsters and youngsters are drawn to the Bishop Arts District in Oak Cliff, where trendy restaurants, cafes and boutiques draw an eclectic – and eccentric – crowd.

Things Not to Miss in Dallas

Some travelers will make sure the first stop on their Dallas travel itinerary is the NorthPark Center mall and Highland Park Village, in order to indulge in that famous Dallas pastime, shopping. But once you've maxed out your cards and your arms are heavy with fantastic finds, follow our Dallas travel guide to explore these other can't-miss Dallas sights, including:

• The Dallas Museum of Art
• The Texas State Fairgrounds
• The Sixth Floor Museum
• The Nasher Sculpture Center

When to Go to Dallas

Summer in Dallas can be unbearably hot; even in the depths of winter, the temperature often remains in the 50s and low 60s. That said, winter storms occasionally bring freezing rain, though rarely snow, so it's not the optimal season to visit. The best time to travel to Dallas is in the spring, when the hills bloom with Texas's famous wildflowers.
