New Photo Book Chronicles Celebrity in the Caribbean

Escape: The Heyday of Caribbean Glamour

Movie stars, heiresses, tycoons— in the early to mid 20th century, they turned the Caribbean into the American Riviera. Hermes Mallea’s Escape: The Heyday of Caribbean Glamour (Rizzoli) chronicles the birth of the palm-lined playgrounds and extravagant, colonial-style resorts that fueled our country’s fascination with the tropics. Ernest Hemingway poses with the day’s catch (swordfish) in Bimini; the Duke and Duchess of Windsor play cards in their tassel-and-toile-filled Nassau living room; Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward take a straw-hatted holiday at Jamaica’s Round Hill. All of it proves that elemental truth: tans may fade, but the lure of paradise is forever.

Instagram Influencers Celebrate World Photo Day

Tuesday marked World Photo Day, a celebration of 175 years since the first photographic process. With more photos being taken every day on a smart phone, Travel + Leisure celebrated by featuring six iPhone photographers on our Instagram account throughout the day.

These talents took us all over the world and put us in the heart of the action: @sweatengine made us feel like we were standing on the side of a New York City skyscraper; @yugi had us craning our necks up a mountain in Rio to see Christ the Redeemer; and @jonathangriffithhad us waking up in a tent in Zion National Park.

We traveled the world for #WorldPhotoDay through the lens of these iPhone photographers and hope that you were able to do the same. In case you actually worked yesterday and couldn’t watch our Instagram feed, we’re sharing their breathtaking photos with you here.

What Your Instagram Filter Says About You

What Your Instagram Filter Says About You

A picture may speak a thousand words, but a filter is a look into a traveler’s soul. Here’s what you’re projecting with your choice of special effects.

Earlybird
To blazes with hard-edged modernity! You yearn for the softly faded era of steamer trunks and hot-air balloons. Jules Verne is your Virgil. Your ideal evening starts with a Delmonico steak and an oyster roast, and ends at the kinetoscope. In your luggage: a hoopskirt and a stovepipe hat.

glorious national park view

Cameras mounted on unmanned drones have found a place in nature photographer’s arsenal (case in point: this breathtaking GoPro video taken at Arches NP in Moab) but as of last week, the National Park Service has banned the use of drones inside vast Yosemite, saying that they disrupt both peace and emergency services.

10 Amazing Aerial Photos That Blow Away Your Out-the-Plane-Window Instagrams

aerial photo

Most of us struggle to take a decent photo from the right angle (and have to cloak our misgivings in Instagram filters), but that's not a problem for award-winning, Boston-based photographer Alex S. MacLean – who flies a Cessna 182, and has been taking photos from the sky for years.

MacLean, who's a licensed pilot and fine art aerial photographer, recently had a show at London's Beetles + Huxley gallery, exhibiting his sky-high shots from over the US and Europe; here are some of our favorites.

There’s only one rule to keep in mind when traveling: If you don't take photos, it didn’t happen. (That, and don’t drink the tap water.) An un-Instagrammed Eiffel Tower may as well not even exist—or, at least, you didn't see it. Yes, travel pics are important.

But what are the most popular shots travelers snap while traipsing the globe? Sightsmap recently used data from a Google-powered photo-sharing app to calculate the most captured spots, right down to the specific landmark. Here are the top 10.

New Book of Portraits Spotlights New York City's Most Stylish Bicycle Riders

Stlish Bicyclist: Brian
