Tech Travel Trends You'll See in 2014: Ultra HD

The digital cognoscenti have officially descended on Las Vegas for Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2014, and though the event’s barely started, there’s already much to report. Here, a look at the tech trends that’ll shape the way you travel—delivered straight from the conference floor.

Ultra-HD: That beautiful HD-TV you bought on Black Friday? It’s so last year’s news. 2014 will be the year of Ultra-HD, also known as 4K, and it’s making its way onto your portable screens, too. Also trending: flexible, curved screens, for cinematic-quality viewing even on a compact device.

Laptops
Two of Toshiba’s newly-announced notebooks, the Tecra W50 and the Satellite P50t, put a glossy, 4K display on a 15.6-inch screen—the most shimmering display yet for movie-watching on the go.

Smartphones
LG is back in the smartphone game with its new G Flex (pictured), which will be available later this year. Its curved screen—the first on a smartphone—is meant to enhance both video and audio quality when the phone is against your face. We’re hopeful that like LG’s new TV’s, the phone will also feature a partnership with Netflix for easy streaming.

Camcorder
You won’t just be able to consume UHD content in 2014—you’ll also be able to create it. Sony’s new AX100 is the first ultra-compact, relatively affordable camcorder of its kind (at $2,000 the bargain is only relative).
