Hotel Opening: Oberoi's Delhi Alternative

If you find yourself heading to Delhi in the future, but are overwhelmed by the populous metropolis that it is, consider staying at the newly opened Oberoi, Gurgaon, located just outside of the city in a self-described “urban oasis.”

Even though the hotel, which opened April 1, is a 30-minute drive from downtown Delhi (and just 15 minutes from the airport), the property includes some pretty fantastic landscaping—guests arrive via a drive that wends its way through a small forest and are greeted by a 10,000-square-foot vertical garden wall, complete with nearly 3,000 potted wedelia plants, and a lake. Oasis indeed. While some would rather stay in the middle of it all, there are many benefits to this new hotel—its 202 guest rooms, starting at 620 square feet, are the largest you’ll find in a city in India.

However, the hotel’s amenities are the main draw. In addition to the city’s first 24-hour spa featuring traditional Balinese and Thai therapies, as well as unexpected treatments like Hot Lava Shell massages, there is also a contemporary Indian art gallery by Nature Morte and curated by Peter Nagy, and 13 luxury boutiques from the likes of Jimmy Choo, Bottega Veneta, and Burberry.

There are several restaurants on the property, including Amaranta, which specializes in seafood, featuring dishes like fresh crab with chili, ginger, and hot basil.

Of course with all this coddling there comes the temptation not to ever leave the comfort of your shiny new surroundings. But in this case, maybe that's OK?
