Apple Co-Founder Steve Jobs Dies

Yesterday, the world lost a true visionary. At the age of just 56, Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple and innovator of some of the most groundbreaking technologies of our time, died after a long bout with pancreatic cancer. His amazing creations changed the way we all live our day-to-day lives.

And without a doubt, he certainly made a tremendous impact on the travel industry. The world has become a much more accessible place to live, but has stayed just as exciting to explore. And it some ways, it seems even more exciting. He's the one that first put our entire music libraries in the palms of our hands, thanks to the iPod almost a full decade ago. (Hard to even remember what we did before them, isn't it?) In early 2006, the iPhone became the jumping off point for easily accessed virtual mobile tourguides, thanks to the myriad apps that poured in after the 2008 App Store launch. And of course, the more recent iPad and MacBook Air releases let travelers leave their bulky laptops home in lieu of these über-light alternatives.

When we travel now, we can easily keep ourselves occupied while waiting for takeoff or riding a train/bus cross-country, whether we're shuffling through one of the 10,000 songs at our fingertips; watching a recently downloaded movie; or using a phone to video chat with family from the other side of the world. And once we reach our destination? We can walk the streets of a foreign city as though we're lifelong residents. Talk about creating a true Global Village.

That said, the best homage I’ve seen is a short video put together by one of my favorite Gizmodo writers, Jesus Diaz. In its simplicity, it does way more to honor Steve’s memory than the words I could write here, so please take a look.

Rest in peace, Steve Jobs. Your genius will be missed, but certainly never forgotten.
