Cruise News: Emerald Waterways Launch

201309-hd-emerald-waterways-cruisesjpg

Another reason to get excited for 2014: Emerald Waterways, the first new river cruise company to enter European rivers in six years, is launching. Details are en route, but cabins are modernist and chic (in calming earth tones); the pool, under a retractable roof, has an adjacent gelato bar; and everything—from locally-sourced wines to four-course dinners to shore excursions to tips—is included in your rate. In other words, if you need me, I’ll be on the Danube…..

Secret Amish Country

201307-hd-amish-dutch-country-pennsylvaniajpg

Last summer I took a road trip to “secret” Amish country—a little-known stretch of farms on route 772, east of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. But how did I get away from the touristy version of Ye-Ancient-Country and experience the reality of America’s oldest locavore movement? We followed insider tips from the horse (-and-buggy)’s mouth: Joel Cliff, of the Pennsylvania Dutch Convention & Visitors Bureau: “The stretch of Rt. 772 that runs Southeast from Route 23 at Leola in the North to Route 340 at Intercourse in the South is chock full of authentic ‘finds’ without being a main tourist corridor.” Cliff was right. At the first roadside stand we pulled into, a twenty-something (barefoot!) couple sold us their homemade cheeses, mint tea, and the best cantaloupe I’ve ever tasted, all as their sweet-natured dogs lazed nearby in the sun. We asked what was down the side road that ran by their house, and the man answered: “Well, everything,” as if his whole world could be found along that gravel path. For two people from New York City, it was very nearly heaven.

Cruise News: Hypoallergenic Rooms on Crystal Cruises

201308-hd-hypoallergenic-cruisejpg

This week Crystal Cruises announced that it’s installing the cruise industry’s first hypoallergenic staterooms. Made in conjunction with PURE Global—the brand behind PURE rooms at SLS Beverly Hills and Fairmont Chicago, among many others—each of the 70 new rooms on Crystal Serenity will have filters that remove 99.9% of impurities and dust. Other perks: “bacteriostatic barriers” applied everywhere for germaphobes, tea tree oil disinfectants, and allergy-friendly bedding. My favorite part? There’s no additional charge to stay in them. Aren’t you feeling better already?

Beauty Road Test: Plantation London Darjeeling Travel Collection

201308-hd-limited-edition-london-hotel-collectionjpg

Are the latest beauty and wellness products worthy of a spot in your teensy carry-on? T+L Associate Editor Kathryn O’Shea-Evans shares her take.

The product: Plantation London Darjeeling Travel Collection, $16

Pros: Their new lemongrass-and-nutmeg-scented gift set (including shower gel, shampoo and conditioner, and lotion) smells “Amazing!” as one colleague put it. What I love? Each one is paraben and sulfate free, with biodegradable packaging.

Cons: I don’t usually pack shower materials, unless I’m staying with a friend. But since this brand can be found at some of the world’s top properties—Plaza Athenee in Paris; One Aldwych in London—maybe it's worth some extra schlepping?

Verdict:  Packable.

Cruise News: A Female Captain for Silversea!

201308-hd-captain-silver-explorerjpg

This week Silversea Cruises announced that for the first time in its 20-year history, one of their ships will have a female captain. Swiss-citizen Margrith Ettlin will be taking the helm of 132-guest Silver Explorer expedition ship.

“I’ve always been fascinated by the beauty of our planet, and its countless different cultures,” Ettlin says. “I thought that spending a life at sea would be the perfect way to explore the world.” Her first stops as captain? The worlds tough-to-navigate, ice floe-filled polar regions.

New Cruise Safety Disclosures

201301-b-carnival-cruise-line-cheers-programjpg

Starting today, Royal Caribbean International, Carnival, and Norwegian Cruise Lines—which represent nearly 90 percent of the cruise business in North America—will begin posting allegations of ship-board crimes on their websites, all in an effort to address concerns related to the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act (CVSSA). T+L reached out to Cruise Lines International Association for comment. Their take?

Cruising is one of the safest, most enjoyable vacation experiences for millions of people every year, and the crime rate on cruise ships is a small fraction of corresponding rates on land.

Beauty Road Test: ILIA Lip Gloss

201307-hd-ilia-lip-glossjpg

Are the latest beauty and wellness products worthy of a spot in your teensy carry-on? T+L Associate Editor Kathryn O’Shea-Evans shares her take.

The product: ILIA lip gloss, $24

Pros: New natural beauty brand ILIA just released an ultra-hydrating collection of lip-glosses in Popsicle-fresh colors. Each is packed with moisturizing ingredients (coconut oil, Shea butter, vitamin E), many of them organic. I adored “Love Buzz,” a Barbie pink shade that gave my lips decidedly grown-up gleam. Bonus: unlike a lot of glosses, it’s not the least bit sticky.

Cons: It only comes in six colors right now, and a couple of them are questionable (Gold? Ox Blood?). But the red, pink, and nude shades are divine.

Verdict:  Packable.

Beauty Road Test: Tom’s of Maine Fresh Mint Whitening Toothpaste

201307-hd-toms-toothpastejpg

Are the latest beauty and wellness products worthy of a spot in your teensy carry-on? T+L Associate Editor Kathryn O’Shea-Evans shares her take.

The Product: Tom’s of Maine Fresh Mint Whitening Toothpaste; $2.99

Pros: Tom’s of Maine just released a 3.0 ounce (travel size!) tube of their whitening toothpaste. I love that it’s "natural" (no artificial ingredients, preservatives, or sweeteners) yet still tastes as fresh as a mouthfull of Altoids. Another perk: 10% of profits go to a variety of environmental and educational charities.

Cons: I didn’t notice any immediate whitening, but that’s something that takes time. Just like stain-making.

Verdict: Packable.
