For the third year, Travel + Leisure's Social Media in Travel and Tourism (SMITTY) awards is recognizng the brands and companies transforming the industry with their online innovations (think digital concierges and exclusive social giveaways).
To help you leverage the digital boom on your next trip and cash in on the latest social currency, we tapped four platform experts for their outreach strategies and insider tips.
This week, Twitter’s Head of Travel Mike De Jesus explains how to leverage your social clout - and reveals the one hashtag you shouldn’t be traveling without.
How to Get the Most from Tweeting on the Road
Give your trip a hashtag. “It’s like having a live, social scrapbook,” says De Jesus. Make it easy for you—and your followers—to revisit each specific outing.
Let your travels stand out with rich media. De Jesus says, “tweets [with] photos and Vine videos tend to garner more engagement.” Add photos and Vine videos to your tweets for extra impact.
Always mention handles (@) for places you visit, and add one or two existing hashtags. “One of my personal favorites,” reveals De Jesus, “is #6secondpostcards for Vine travel videos.” Try the general #travel to join in on the larger conversation.
Check back every Friday this month for guides from award-winning director Jon Chu, Twitter’s Head of Travel Mike De Jesus, Renee Blodgett, founder of We Blog The World, and viral Instagrammer Cole Rise.
