Holiday and Airport Travel Tips Straight From Our Experts

Where are you going for the holidays? We recently asked a panel of travel experts in an Airport and Holiday Travel Twitter Chat, and the answers ranged the gamut.

The Weather Channel is having a “Staycation #HomeForTheHolidays.” T+L International Editor, Mark Orwoll, has a similar plan—he said, “Turns out everyone’s coming to MY house this year. Now I guess I have to invite all of you too, to avoid hurt feelings.” What’s for dinner, Mark? We’re not about to turn down that invitation!

Travaasa shared that it’s “important to find someplace to unplug, and focus on reflecting before the New Year” which we couldn’t agree more with. A “digital detox” sounds like the perfect 2014 New Year’s travel resolution.

For holiday packing tips, flight attendant and best-selling author, Heather Poole shared her words of travel wisdom: “Pack black and be done with it.” Rick Seaney said, “TSA PreCheck is the #1 packing tip.”

We wanted to also give our panel an open forum to kvetch a little. For biggest holiday travel pet peeves, Gate Guru App said “long lines for bad airport food!” whereas T+L Executive Digital Editor, Rich Beattie, made a Christmas plea: “Just once, Santa, I’d like a holiday flight that’s not delayed or canceled.”

For holiday travel-booking tips, Kayak recommended “departing as close to the 25th as possible for Christmas travel.” Liftopia shared a similar sentiment, “Xmas day is one of the best days of the season to ski. NO lines, great deals, untracked snow!” AAA Travel recommended that travelers “check alternate dates for your travel and compare fares at nearby airports. Greater flexibility can result in savings.”

For top travel apps, Valerie Wilson Travel recommends that jetsetters use WhatsApp, which is a “free texting service via Wi-Fi. Saves you money on international data plans and connects you with family and friends.” Our T+L Trip Doctor shared the importance of Google Maps: “I am literally lost without [it].”

As always, we asked our panel to describe the topic in three words. From Poole, she said: “My holiday travel strategy in 3 words: Inhale. Exhale. Caffeine. (Or should that be wine. Wine, right?)” It’s the holidays—go for the wine instead.
