#ShopLikeALocal as Only the Experts Know How
If you had a limitless budget, where would be the one city you’d shop in and what would you buy? Whether you’re a top designer, devoted foodie, or just travel-obsessed, responses to this type of question are nothing short of daydream-worthy.
For our most recent #ShopLikeALocal Twitter chat, answers to this question ranged from Designers Yeardley Smith of Marchez Vous and Kara Ross of Kara Ross NY both choosing New York City; Designer Chris Benz voting for Paris to hunt down the many treasures he covets; Creative Director, Rafe, wanting to head off the map and buy a beachfront house in Palawan; or Designer Cynthia Vincent dreaming of a summer home in Istanbul so that she can decorate it with everything from local markets and bazaars—for us, we would choose all of the above.
When it came to favorite go-to stores, Creative Director of Field Scout, Ryan Hartman, heads to Merci in Paris for “people watching, home goods, current styles, and proper stationary” while Fiona Kotur hits 10 Corso Como in Milan for inspiration by Carla Sozzani, editor-in-chief of Italian Vogue. Design Director, Mark Wiesmayr of AG Jeans, stays stateside and loves heading to Portland, Oregon to visit the store Beam and Anchor. Chief Design Officer of GUESS, Sharleen Ernster Lazear, always finds beautiful jewelery, textiles, and furniture for amazing prices at the Jaipur markets in India.
For tips on navigating your favorite street market, Of Wit and Will Founder and Publisher, Suzy Kellems Dominik, suggested being “flexible, magic is around every corner!” We loved T+L Special Correspondent, Shane Mitchell's advice: “come hungry.” T+L Contributor, Elizabeth Minchilli suggested never buying anything “before checking out the entire market.” For American travel brand Tumi, they advised keeping “your head up so you don't miss anything.”
As always, we finished our chat by asking our panel of experts to describe the topic in three words. For how to #ShopLikeALocal, we thought T+L Associate Editor Kathryn O’Shea Evans captured it well: “Charge it, Please.”
