Q&A: Celebrity Fitness Instructor Kristin McGee
The first time I took globetrotting fitness guru Kristin McGee’s Pilates class at the SoHo Equinox, I was instantly a fan. Then I found out she was the instructor in Bethenny Frankel’s first yoga DVD, Body by Bethenny. She is highly sought after in New York City, with clients like Steve Martin, Tina Fey, Ben Stiller, and his wife Christine Taylor. Kristin has made numerous TV and magazine appearances, blogs daily on her own site, and has led fitness retreats in Sicily, Cartagena, Marrakesh and St. Petersburg. No wonder she wakes up at 5 a.m. to fit it all in!
We met for a glass of wine, talked great hotels and healthy food choices on the road, and planned a double date with our significant others.
Q: What are your favorite hotels around the world?
A: The month I got married, I stayed at Mii Amo at The Enchantment Resort in Sedona. Everything is oriented to giving yourself the best care from the inside out, from the incredible spa cuisine to the line-up of daily classes. We stayed at the Sun Valley Lodge in my home state of Idaho the night of my wedding. The lodge is very old-school and feels like you’re in a big European chalet, with an ice-skating rink open year round.
Last summer, I led a retreat to St. Petersburg, Russia and we took over The Alexander House, a boutique hotel. We would do two yoga or pilates classes a day, go out for fun excursions and come back to a lovely meal at the hotel. The rooms were really large and many had kitchens and bars.
Q: What do you order off the room service menu to stay energized &
A: I love minestrone soup. Or I’ll order two healthy appetizers, like portobello mushroom skewers and shrimp cocktail. Sometimes I’ll eat breakfast for dinner, like eggs or oatmeal. And I always bring quick snacks, like Larabars, KIND bars, or instant soup mixes.
Q: Do you have any hotels on your bucket list?
A: So many! One would be the Four Seasons in Nevis. I’ve never stayed at any Four Seasons and I’ve heard so many wonderful things about the Nevis property. I would also say any castle hotel in Ireland, like Ashford Castle or The Lodge at Doonbeg. I have private clients that stay at Shutters on the Beach in L.A. all the time so I’d love to see what they rave about. I’d also like to go to Parrot Cay, which sounds like a perfect upscale yogi destination.
