Q & A with a Tech Whiz Kid

Tom Samiljan, the technology-guru who wrote our “Best Travel Gadgets 2011/T+L Tech Awards” (in our May 2011 issue), has some pretty interesting things to say about the future of gadgets. I asked him a few of my most burning questions:

Q: WHAT WILL CELL PHONES BE LIKE IN THE NEXT 10 YEARS?
A: I think touch screens will be as flexible as Fruit Roll-Ups, with holographic interfaces projected in front of you that can be controlled via motion gestures.

Q: WHAT IS AN OUTDATED CONTRAPTION YOU WISH WE STILL USED?
A: Landlines. Not the kind you get from your Internet company, but the old-school, copper-wire kind. They still work when the power is down, something I learned during a New York City blackout.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR DREAM INVENTION?
A: A microwave that instantly makes food and drinks cold.

Q: MOMENT OF TRUTH: DO YOU PREFER APPLE OR PC?
A: If push came to shove, I’d have to say Apple. My MacBook Air starts up in 30 seconds, and it’s hard to walk away from that.
