Now Open, Brooklyn Winery: The Borough's First Urban Winemaker

Brooklynites have been able to find vegetables, beer, and even wine produced in their own borough for quite awhile now. And while they’ve found ways to brew beer in their apartments, they haven’t been able to make their own vino. At least until the borough’s first winemaking center, Brooklyn Winery, opened its doors in Williamsburg a few weeks ago.

Don’t know much about making wine? Don't worry. The winery's staff—including winemaker Conor McCormack from San Francisco's urban winery, Crushpad—will guide you through the entire process, from selecting your varietal to designing your label. It doesn't come cheap—you'll need $5700 to produce your own barrel.

201010-b-bklyn-winery-3jpgIf you don't need that much—or if you're only in town for a few days—you can still enjoy wine produced in-house at the bar attached to the winery. Designed using mostly reclaimed materials—including World War II ammo boxes repurposed as wine racks, vintage industrial light fixtures, and 1940s wallpaper—this dark, cozy space is a welcome change from the excess of dive bars in this corner of Brooklyn.

In addition to a full wine list, a number of small plates are available from the winery’s partner and neighbor, Radish. Get an order of lamb meatballs ($8), or a sandwich with cheddar and apple-ginger chutney served on bread from Sullivan Street Bakery ($7).

The Brooklyn Winery is located within walking distance of the Bedford Avenue L stop—a (quick!) 10-minute subway ride from Union Square in Manhattan.

Brooklyn Winery; 213 North 8th St., Brooklyn; 347-763-1506; bkwinery.com; drinks for two from $14.
