Review: Philips Fidelio DS7550 Portable iPhone/iPod Speaker

Philips Fidelio DS7550

I’m one of those people who can’t go too long without plugging into my iPod, especially when I'm on the road. Luckily, more and more hotels are now furnishing rooms with iPod docks—but plenty others still don’t. And never mind vacation rental homes, which can be all over the place when it comes to amenities.

In situations like that, you either go without or bring something along. (Preferably something that won’t take up too much space in your suitcase.) One option is the Philips Fidelio DS7550 portable iPod speaker dock, which I had the opportunity to borrow this week.

I will start by saying that it isn’t the most compact portable speaker system, but at about 12x4x2” (LxHxW) and just over 1 1/2 pounds, it’s easy enough to slip into your carry-on bag. The sound quality is fantastic for a portable system; and while the volume can be turned up pretty high, you couldn’t use it to throw any ragers. (Though it was able to drown out my ear-piercing shower singing, for which I'm sure my roommates are extremely grateful.)

Another bonus is the dual power source. When you’re indoors, the dock can remain plugged into the wall, simultaneously playing music and charging the battery. When you're ready to head out, you can count on eight hours of playback (when fully charged).

Other fun features include: a built-in, pop-out stand to keep the dock upright; a nylon carrying case with an extra pouch to hold the a/c plug; and an optional downloadable app which gives you even more options (sound settings, clock display, battery status, etc.).

Take a look at the Philips site for more detailed product information. To purchase, head over to a Mac store or order online ($129.95, with free shipping; store.apple.com).
