The Best Bed in Maine

Admittedly, I haven’t tried out every bed Down East. But it’s hard to imagine a better night of sleep than one I recently indulged in at Hidden Pond, a year-plus-old retreat inland from Kennebunkport, the Bush Family stomping grounds.

We arrived on a Thursday evening and got settled in our cottage, Moon Watch (the 60-acre property is dotted with 16 individually-designed lodgings). It was raining, of course, as it has done pretty much every day this summer on the East Coast. But the precipitation turned out to be an effective lullaby. Our second-floor bedroom had two walls of windows with nice views of the surrounding birch groves and balsam firs, and the steady patter of raindrops on the eaves and the leaves instilled some sort of zen calm.

The bed itself: king size, clad in pristine white accented by tans, with a down-filled duvet and Frette linens (I’m not one who typically cares about brand or thread count, but these were damn comfortable). We hit the hay by midnight and lo and behold, nearly made it to noon the next day, the steady rain helping to dampen our inner alarms, before sauntering downstairs to the kitchen for breakfast (the resort delivers a basket of fresh muffins and scones each morning).

Yes, we got out and about over the course of our three-night stay—strolled on Goose Rocks Beach (a mile from the property), spent big $$$ for dinner at the innovative Hugo’s in Portland, and picked up lobster rolls from the Clam Shack in Kennebunkport (no mayo in this recipe, just butter; an interesting deviation from the norm). And Hidden Pond provides bikes and plenty of opportunities for a walk in the woods.

But mainly we sat around looking forward to going back to bed. At the most basic level, what a traveler wants from a hotel is a clean, quiet spot to get some shut-eye, and Hidden Pond delivers. Rain not guaranteed.
