When to visit Peru

May is a smart time of year to explore Peru. Rainy weather has subsided by then, and costs are still considerably lower than in the summer months (June officially marks the beginning of high season). This means a window of opportunity for travelers hoping to enjoy Peru’s most famous sights without breaking the bank. We found tickets to Lima for as low as $665 in May (compared with $861 fares available for the following month). Most itineraries to Machu Picchu, including some from Country Walkers, kick off in the historic city of Cuzco—which hosts the annual Cruz Velacuy, a four-day festival replete with costumes and processions, happening this year May 3–6.
