Tourist resources for Saigon

The Word HCMC, a free English-language monthly available at most up-market restaurants and bars, is far and away the best of the city's lifestyle magazines, with spot-on reviews and up-to-the-minute recommendations for where to eat, shop, and go out. Other publications to look out for: AsiaLife (www.asialifehcmc.com) another free monthly very similar to The Word; and Time Out (www.vir.com.vn) a supplement to the Vietnam Investment Review.

The frequently updated Luxe Guide: Ho Chi Minh City (www.luxeguides.com), sold stateside at major bookstores and at hotel gift shops in Saigon, is a reliable source for au courant shopping and restaurant suggestions.

And should you be staying at the Park Hyatt (saigon.park.hyatt.com), ask for the concierge desk's excellent Shopping map.

For insider advice on street food and local specialties, check out gas•tron•o•my (www.gastronomyblog.com), an informal and engaging blog by Saigon resident Cathy Danh, a 25-year-old Vietnamese-American who knows her cha gio from her banh xeo.
