When to go to Athens
The weather is best in May, June, September, and October, when it’s dry but not scorchingly hot. Most Athenians skip town for at least two weeks around the holiday of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary (August 15th), which makes the sweltering city pleasantly uncrowded but also means that many of the best restaurants are closed. The Holy Week preceding Orthodox Easter in April or May (dates change each year) is a wonderful time to visit; the entire country is caught up in the celebration (even McDonald’s offers a Lenten menu), and signs of the season, including red eggs and ladybugs, are everywhere.
