Buses in Costa Rica
Numerous private and public buses run from San José to outlying destinations around the country. Of the privately operated companies, Grayline (011-506-220-2126; www.graylinecostarica.com) and Interbus (011-506-283-5573; www.interbusonline.com) have the most comfortable service (clean, air-conditioned coaches that run more or less on time); one-way fares to most places are less than $50. Public buses are shabbier (many are converted school buses) and slower (since they make more stops) but are the preferred mode of travel for most locals.
