Getting around Maine

The ideal way to explore Maine is by car. U.S. Route 1 (which can be bumper-to-bumper in season) traces the coast, while the multilane Maine Turnpike (I-95) splices through the interior via the capital of Augusta to Bangor. Take I-295 from 1-95 to access the Greater Portland area and Casco Bay corridor. Beyond these major roads, Maine is laced with easily navigable country byways, unless you happen on a dirt logging road that seemingly goes on for miles. Of course, sailing from coastal town to town is not a bad way to travel, either.
