Pretty without being pretentious, the Buenos Aires horse-racing track bears witness to the elegance that once surrounded the sport. The track and its 100-year-old classical French grandstand by French architect Louis Faure-Dujarric were privatized and restored to their Belle Époque glory in the early ‘90s. In the upstairs restaurant, horse-society bigwigs watch the races from first row tables; downstairs, the less swish watch just yards from the finish line; and in the basement casino, bettors pour their cash into slot machines. While you may not get one of the best tables upstairs, it’s worth a visit to see the old-school scene, grand setting, and high-society hobnobbing; the upstairs dress code accordingly prohibits sneakers.

Insider Tip: Get there early to score one of the wooden tables on the flower-bed-lined lawn that fronts the track.
