This weekly street fair is where Porteños go to discover their country’s rural roots without leaving the city. Started in 1986 in the distinctly blue-collar stockyards neighborhood of Mataderos (the local soccer team, in homage to the U.S.’s meat center, is named Nueva Chicago), the fair features gauchos in horse-riding competitions, folk dancing, and artisans selling traditional woolen ponchos, gaucho knives, and canned country foods, all under a haze of delicious smoke rising from steak and sausage cooking in halved oil drum grills. It would all seem hokey if Argentina didn’t have such a proud gaucho culture, real cowboys and all.
Insider Tip: Time your visit to coincide with the horse-riding competitions—they’re usually held around 2 p.m.
