SFMOMA settled into its Mario Botta-designed building—known (and sometimes reviled) for its striped, skylit cylindrical tower—more than a decade ago, but the exhibitions here are still as cutting edge as they were in the beginning. Sure, there’s the occasional Matisse or Picasso crowd-pleaser, but recent installations like the Matthew Barney and Olafur Eliasson retrospectives, or the biennial SECA Art Award shows, give the museum continued street cred.

Tip: On weekends or for popular exhibitions, there can be a long line to get in; skip it by buying your tickets online ($3 surcharge) and presenting the printout at the door.

Admission: $12.50 adults; $8 seniors; $7 students; free for children under 13; free for all on the first Tuesday of each month. Closed Wednesday.
