Lingua Franca — Rachelle Hruska MacPherson’s line of statement sweaters — sort of just happened. While revisiting her childhood hobby of embroidery, she stitched “booyah” onto her favorite vintage cashmere sweater and, naturally, posted it to Instagram.

After several of her friends had requested their own versions of the sweater, MacPherson ran with it, launching Lingua Franca, which has since gained media and celebrity attention for its 100% cashmere sweaters embroidered with hip-hop lyrics (and, as of late, fiery political statements).

The unexpected blend of Biggie Smalls and colorful cashmere is what MacPherson sees as the "lingua franca," or common language, of our generation. Her line has since evolved to include a series of cashmere sweaters for women and children — all hand-stitched in NYC — with embroidery ranging from Lauryn Hill's “That Thing” to Eminem's “I think I love you baby" to Beyonce's “Who run the world?.”
