6 Niche Beauty Brands to Try Now

Sure, there are the mainstay staples that will always live on your vanity, but every once in a while a new brand will come along and get you excited about your beauty routine again. Here are six that did just that.

Keep up with all the latest Korean skin trends—egg white face mask, pomegranate collagen lip mask, and more—without paying a fortune. This Korean-based line uses exotic foods (like Brazilian black sugar, South Asian black honey, and French grapes) as its muse when creating formulas. We were sold when we spotted the Gummy Bear Jelly Hand Cream. You may not think of hand cream as very exciting, but you’ll reconsider once you see the candy packaging. Plus, the scents remind us of desserts.

2 Simple Sugars

Limited by ultra sensitive and eczema-prone skin, Lani Lazzari created Simple Sugars in her kitchen in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The gentle face and body scrubs are made with sugar, which slowly melt when mixed with water so you can’t over-exfoliate, and a blend of oils, including organic soybean oil, safflower oil, jojoba oil, and apricot kernel oil, that moisturize the skin so well you won’t need to apply lotion afterward. The hardest part is choosing which scent to buy. The strawberry scrub smelled so fresh, we wanted to eat it right out of the jar.

Keep your beauty routine fun with this New York-based makeup and skincare line. Not only are the products unique—egg mellow cream, for instance—but they also partner with Korean artists so the packaging is usually covered with fun doodles. The Dinoplatz Escalator Mascara allows you to lengthen and contract the wand’s bristles for longer and fuller lashes.

To buy: sephora.com, $25.

The minimal packaging and blend of unusual botanical ingredients—frankincense powder, pomegranate tincture, tamanu extract—might lead you to believe this skincare line was shipped directly from France. But the face polish, oil elixir, and crème lumière—to name a few—are all locally sourced and made in Seattle. Plus, they are all free of sulfates, parabens, synthetic preservatives, pthalates, and fragrance oils. The facial polish, which is full of finely ground botanical powders, is among our favorites for its gentle yet deep clean.

If you’re bored with basic makeup lines, give this one a whirl. Founded by industry insiders, the line is created with functionality and a fast-paced lifestyle in mind. The Sunshine Skin Tint is especially convenient, thanks to a rollerball applicator and a fluid formula that blends seamlessly into skin.

To buy: sephora.com, $42.

6 Byredo

Founder Ben Gorham uses a 'simple' approach to fragrance (he only uses around five to 10 raw materials whereas typical perfumers work with 50 to 80) so every note stands out and instantly transports you right to the places they were inspired by. While they are pricey, we love to get our fill with the hair perfumes. Flowerhead was inspired by all of the flowers used during traditional Indian weddings and the fragrance they leave behind.

To buy: byredo.com, $62.
