Bog Snorkeling, Wales

With a name as appropriately thick as bog water, the town of Llanwrtyd Wells is home to the annual bog snorkeling world championships. The two laps of the 60-yard bog is complicated by the fact that the water is thick with silt and reeds and, according to organizer Sheelagh Tompkins, getting a mouthful of the stuff is enough to make even hardened competitors gag. “Competitors who fare best are people who play underwater hockey as they have vast experience in controlling their breathing,” she claims.
