Today marks the 78th-annual National Donut Day. Since the first such holiday was established in 1938 (to recognize the Salvation Army Doughnut Girls who gave soldiers donuts during WWII to sweeten their spirits) proponents of the usually sugary, always delicious rings have been offering freebies, specialties, and other enticing offers.
But while there’s nothing wrong with a classic glazed confection from Krispy Kreme or Dunkin’ Donuts (two of the country’s first, and most prominent donut chains), why settle?
No matter where you are in the country, you’re sure to find a top-notch bakery making plain donuts look like sad, tan inner tubes. So make your sugar rush worth the calories and start your morning off at one of America’s best donut shops.
