Trail: Leelanau Peninsula Wine Trail
Number of Wineries: 16
Distance: 80 miles
Description: In this region, long considered the Cherry Capital of the World, grapes are a relatively new agricultural commodity. The wine region lies along the 45th Parallel—which also stretches through the Bordeaux region of France—and the 'lake effect' from Lake Michigan provides ideal cool-climate growing conditions. There are some unusual wineries to experience: Shady Lane Cellars was a former chicken coop, and Left Foot Charley in nearby Traverse City used to be a laundry facility in an old state insane asylum.
Where to Sip: Known for its award-winning wines and spirits, Black Star Farms has a luxurious B&B, farmers’ market, creamery, and stables. Try its Arcturos Late Harvest Riesling at any of the three tasting rooms in Suttons Bay, Traverse City, and on the Old Mission Peninsula.
Where to Stay: If the inn at Black Star Farms is filled, check into Chateau Chantal. The old-world inn pairs vineyard views with amazing breakfasts (it also has a winery and tasting room).
