Eminönü/Sultanahmet
Tarihi Sultanahmet Köftecisi
Since 1920, this workingman’s dive has remained hugely popular despite serving only two main dishes: meatballs and lamb skewers. Both are simple, but juicy and ultra-fresh due to the restaurant’s high turnover (the restaurant claims to serve 10 times more meatballs every day than their myriad local imitators). Accompanied by crusty white bread and a peasant salad of white beans, tomato, and cucumber, these are among the best meals you’ll find in the city.
Insider Tip:
Finish with the sweet semolina irnik helvası—which is so good that even locals find themselves praising it (almost unheard of, since every Turk is raised to believe that no irnik helvası could possibly compare with his mother’s).
