There wasn’t much in Fregene, a seaside town 40 kilometers from Rome, until renowned director Frederico Fellini discovered it while filming The White Sheik. Charmed by the windswept location, he established a get-away villa, bringing along a who’s who of Italian 60s’ glitterati. Ignazio Mastino, who owned the beach, capitalized on the new arrivals with a restaurant in a pretty, white cottage. Ever since, he’s profited from a reputation for succulent seafood dishes like crostini with mini clams and octopus with balsamic vinegar. A walk on the adjacent beach is the best dessert.
Insider Tip:
Busses to Fregene leave from the terminal next to Cornelia metro stop in Rome. The journey takes about 35 minutes and tickets can be purchased at most tabacchi shops.
