Mercat de la Boquería No. 691
20 kinds of Mediterranean sea creatures—from humble sardines to live langoustines—glisten on ice, awaiting a gentle bath in hot olive oil or a brief stint on the plancha. On busy days Universal does 500 covers, which doesn’t affect the precision of its preparations.
From the May 2008 Food & Wine Go List
This venerable lunch counter inside La Boquería market offers some of the city’s best and most affordable seafood. Customers choose from the fish and shellfish displayed on ice, then order it a la plancha (grilled on a plank) or sautéed in olive oil with loads of garlic.
We loved: Grilled rodoballo (turbot) and pristine navajas (razor clams) with a side of seared wild mushrooms.
