Found in the unlikely spot of the Waiakea Center strip mall between Walmart and Office Max is Hilo Bay Cafe, which offers American Nouveau cuisine. The curved marble bar and black tables are offset by citrus yellow walls, red accents, and orchids. A signature dish is the burger topped with onions deep fried in Guinness batter, barbecue sauce, sharp cheddar, and bacon. Another good choice is the pizza with local hamakua mushrooms, arugula, cherry tomatoes, and basil pesto cream. The daily specials always include a vegetarian, meat, and fish choice.
