Grotta Azzurra
New York, NY, 10013, United States
Originally opened in 1908, "the Grotta" is an institution in New York City’s Little Italy. This inviting restaurant features dark wood chairs, paneled ceilings, and circular images of Italian statues on the walls, while the blue-lit stone of the wine cellar evokes the beauty of Capri, Italy's Blue Grotto cave (which the restaurant is named after). Known for his authentic Italian cuisine, chef Frank Castellana serves up classics like spaghetti carbonara alongside signature dishes such as the braciole, sausage, and meatball special. Taste Grotta Azzurra's bucatini amatriciana (pasta with pancetta, onions, and tomatoes) and you'll quickly see why it was a popular hangout for such legendary celebrities as Frank Sinatra and Enrico Caruso.
Insider Tip:
If you're an Italian dessert purist, then look past the cannoli (they have mascarpone) to the drink menu's Tiramisú Martini.
