Filistron

23 Apostolou Pavlou St.
Athens, Greece
TEL: 30-210-342-2897
The name, taken from the Orphic Hymns, means “one who loves inspiration,” and it’s easy to feel inspired on the roof garden of Filistron, with what is arguably Athens’s best view of the illuminated Acropolis and Mount Lycabettus—without the corresponding high prices. The low-key taverna serves down-home Anatolian specialties—including rollakia (rolled eggplant filled with minced meat), homemade or bottled wine (the red house wine is better than the white), and delicious yogurt with black cherry for dessert—from its unparalleled location on the pedestrian walkway that winds around the Acropolis. In winter, seating is inside the cheery white-wood-paneled dining room, where picture windows frame a mise-en-scène of mooning couples, soccer-playing children, and gypsies selling balloons.

Insider Tip:

After dinner, walk under the Acropolis toward Vassilias Amalias street; the well-lit walkway is safe even late at night.
