Chef John Toulze and proprietor Sondra Bernstein—the same duo behind The Girl and the Fig—set their sights on rustic Italian cuisine with this new eatery, which they opened in 2008 in a spectacular 1864 Victorian mansion. They brought with them the same attention to detail that’s made their earlier outpost a success—starting with a space that manages to feel both sophisticated and welcoming (there’s both a grand high-ceilinged dining room with burnt-umber walls, and a breezy, tree-shaded terrace). The menu incorporates many of Toulze’s well-known house-made specialties, like salumi, vinegars, and olives and veggies he grows in the on-site garden. Do yourself a favor and order a wood-fired pizza (we like the Foraged variety, made with wild mushrooms, roasted garlic, and Pecorino) or, if it’s available, the gnocchi with black truffles and braised pork cheeks.

Insider Tip:

Start the evening with a Lemon Drop, made with Toulze’s house-brewed limoncello.
