San José
El Chicote
north of Parque La Sabana
San José, Central Valley, Costa Rica
A San José institution for nearly 40 years, this steakhouse is the kind of place where Costa Rican coffee barons and their international financiers discuss business over rare rib-eyes. The traditional dining room of dark, varnished-wood beams and tables is brightened by tropical plants and hanging ferns. Though red meat’s the thing here, there’s a good selection of fish and poultry dishes as well, from buttery fresh-caught halibut to lightly breaded, pan-fried chicken fillets (called milanesas). The list of wines from Italy, Spain, France, and California is impressive—especially in a country that rarely serves wine at all—and the bilingual black-tie service is unusually sophisticated for Costa Rica. Try the pound-and-a-half T-bone, if you’re up to the challenge.
Insider Tip:
Establish a good rapport with the waiters and you’ll be sure to get the best cuts.
