Tourists frequent Café de Tacuba not only for the food and pastries, but also for the art that lines the walls. Situated in the historic city center, the café sits inside what was once an 18th-century convent. The main dining room is outfitted with heavy wooden chairs, tile work, Palladian arches, and the larger-than-life oil paintings of nuns preparing moles. The varied venue includes Euro-style coffee and Mexican treats such as nut pies and chocolate cake. Savory dishes include moles, enchiladas, and tamales. In the evenings, troupes of costumed musicians spice up the scene.

Insider Tip:

Café de Tacuba was built atop a street used by the Aztecs to flee from Cortez in 1520. Legend says Aztec gold is buried in the mud under the café.
