Bordewijk
Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Hidden away behind an unassuming façade on the far north side of the Nordermarkt street market in the Jordaan, Bordewijk is neither Amsterdam’s coolest restaurant, nor its newest, nor its most design-centric (“pleasant” is the best way to describe the undulating tiled walls and glass conservatory–style entrance). But in this decidedly non-service-oriented country, Bordewijk continues to draw locals and visitors with what qualifies as a positively effusive welcome and five-star attention. With consistently excellent, refined versions of rustic food (house-made blood sausages with apple compote and cream of horseradish, ravioli filled with sheep’s ricotta in a roughly chopped salsa of red onion and black truffles), the food satisfies as much as the service.
Insider Tip:
You can do just fine ordering two appetizers here—portions are enormous and there’s usually plenty of game and fish on the starters list—and no one will mind in the kitchen.
