Kolonaki

17, Athens

2 Lykavyttou
Athens, Greece
TEL: 30-210-364-7049
Open since 1957, this journalist’s haunt was the first “bar” in Athens that “nice” ladies could frequent without being mistaken for working girls. Jackie Kennedy ate at the restaurant’s original location a few streets away—first with John, then with Ari—and the current location, home to the restaurant since 1972, is still a favorite with foreign correspondents working in the area. The menu changes daily, focusing on Greek cuisine at lunch (think elegant, thin phyllo rolls stuffed with minced meat) and international dishes by night, but when asked for the restaurant’s signature dish, the owner, who has published a book of 17’s cocktail recipes, insists, “We make the best dry martini in Greece.”

Insider Tip:

If you need to settle important business over your meal, come at lunch; at night the restaurant is strictly off the clock, and live piano music rules out serious conversation.
