Sydneysiders are an active bunch—and rightly so. A city this beautiful demands the physical attributes of its citizens help it live up to the name, so whether it’s sunny or rainy, local residents tend to be out running, walking, biking, and grunting their way through outdoor boot camps seven days of the week. But yoga is also big business here: The city is dotted with yoga studios offering all variations on the practice, as well as a smattering of oceanfront locales that are a must-visit for Salutations on sunny Saturday mornings before breakfast. Yoga may not seem like the first priority on a trip to a foreign city, but it sure beats soulless workouts in a thumbnail-sized hotel gym. And besides, you’re going to need some centering, decompression, and deep breathing after that loooooong plane ride. Try one of these excellent yoga studios for maximum bliss in limber Sydney.

Preshana Yoga

With an all-female staff of instructors, this popular school has locations in Darlinghurst and Glebe. They keep things light here, with a special focus on vinyasa, alignment, and flow at their regular workshops. Interested in a one-on-one session? They’ll do that, too.

InYoga

Nicole Walsh and Rod Galbraith run this airy studio in the heart of Surry Hills, and they clearly thought things through during the planning process—a line-up of charismatic yoga instructors, gigantic mat storage wall, fresh flowers, and a bowl of fresh fruit for the taking. Try the rejuvenate class; the hour-long class combines gentle yoga poses and a wind-down heavy on meditation. 

House of Yoga

This peaceful studio located on the edge of the verdant Redfern Park is an oasis for locals who want to stretch out, stay fit, and get blissful. It’s also one of the only studios in Sydney offering anti-gravity yoga classes, which will find you cocooned inside a hanging silk rope during your practice. It’s a heady trip—and you’ll be smiling the entire time.

Andrew (Boy) Charlton Pool

The pool may be closed in the winter months, but they keep things warm in the yoga studio, where you can om to your heart’s content with an unparalleled view of Woolloomoloo Bay. Light streams into the waterside studio, which houses a variety of classes covering off all styles: vinyasa, hatha, yin, and even AcroYoga are offered here. 

Yoga by the Sea

You’ll have a hard time staying in downward-facing dog at one of these sessions, which take place at Bondi Icebergs and the Tamarama and Bronte Surf Clubs on most mornings. (Venues alternate, so be sure to check the schedule online.) The Bondi classes happen poolside at the surf club with a spectacular view that can’t be beat. I’m a fan of the Bronte sessions, though: You’re inside, but the entire eastern wall faces the ocean, and it’s open air on warm days.
