A trip to Shanghai is not complete without a glamorous night out on the Bund—the waterfront promenade flanked by stately Art Deco and neoclassical buildings along the bustling Huangpu River. The area is famous for luxury boutiques, five-star hotels, world-class restaurants and nightlife. And the crowning glory of it all is a jaw-dropping view of the futuristic, neon-lit skyline of Pudong across the river.

The Bund has several rooftop venues to watch the sun go down followed by the space-age super towers lighting up in their neon splendor. Perched on opposite ends of the lengthy riverside stretch, The Rooftop at Waterhouse, Char Bar at the Indigo Hotel and Vue Bar at the Hyatt have the best panoramas in town, topnotch tipples, and stylish settings. Another place to enjoy the view is the nightclub Bar Rouge. If you arrive when the doors open at 6 p.m., chances are you’ll have the famous terrace almost entirely to yourself. Already have your fill of the Pearl Tower? Sit inside one of the Bund’s swanky cocktail lounges. Sultry Latin lounge Unico is where the well-heeled 30-somethings kick-up their Louboutins. Equally chic but way more subdued is the veteran lounge Glamour Bar, a cozy setting to linger over conversation and cocktails late into the night.

CHAR

CHAR is an excellent, elegant steakhouse housed in the young, stylish Indigo Hotel on the southern reaches of the Bund. The only thing that impresses guests more than the perfectly cooked cuts of premium beef is CHAR’s breathtaking rooftop bar. Perched on the 30th floor, this expansive terrace overlooks a stunning scene: the Bund dramatically sweeping northward, ships cruising along the Huangpu River and futuristic super towers of Lujiazui. For non-guests of the hotel, CHAR charges a cover to keeps crowds small so visitors can enjoy sunset drinks and fine wine in a relaxed, exclusive setting.

The Roof at Waterhouse

The Roof at Waterhouse offers the fine cocktails, glamour, and views of the Bund but in a more chill, intimate outdoor setting. As part of the exclusive boutique hotel The Waterhouse, this rooftop terrace feels hidden away from the hullabaloo on the Bund. The wooden deck with ample greenery and sleek high-top tables echoes the minimal modern sophistication of the hotel. The bar serves superb noshes from the hotel’s superstar restaurant Table No. 1 and classic cocktails. Come here to rub elbows with creative industry elite.

Glamour Bar

One of Shanghai’s first high-end cocktail lounges, Glamour Bar is an institution.  The chic bar has outlived the competition due to its impeccable service, superbly crafted drinks and warm atmosphere. Flowing around a central, glowing red bar, the single expansive room has an intriguing mix of contemporary and traditional design. Guests can gather around antique chaise lounges, Ming dynasty chairs and velvety sofas while enjoying classic cocktails and small bites. While Glamour Bar lacks an outdoor terrace, floor-to-ceiling windows frame views of the river and skyscrapers of Lujiazui. The subdued, refined setting makes it an especially popular lounge for an older, sophisticated crowd.
