Among the many exciting things happening in Mexico City over the past few years–hotel openings, endless gastronomic options, concept stores–it’s important to mention a renewed surge in artistic interest. Not only do we have dozens of museums in Mexico (LINK TO MUSEUMS ARTICLE), but art galleries are on the rise as well. Two of the best representatives of this movement are José Kuri and Mónica Manzutto, whose gallery, Kurimanzutto, recently celebrated its fifteenth birthday and continues to be a reference when it comes to art spaces in the city. Like Kurimanzutto, the best galleries in Mexico make appearances in major art international fairs every year–think Art Basel, the Chicago Art Fair–and help put national and foreign talents under the spotlight.
Located in the up-and-coming neighborhood of San Miguel Chapultepec, Mónica Manzutto and José Kuri’s space has become one of the most relevant galleries in the country. Featuring artists such as Abraham Cruzvillegas, Dr. Lakra and Gabriel Orozco, this gallery represents Mexico in world-class fairs such as Frieze London and Art Basel.
Contemporary art is the main focus at this Colonia Juárez gallery, where the eclectic list of artists includes sculptors such as Korea’s Lee Jaehyo and Mexico City’sJorge Yázpik, as well as multi-platform artists like Spain’s Begoña Egurbide. The setting, an early-twentieth century town house, is quite a work of art itself, too.
A frequent presence in fairs like Art Bogotá, Art Basel and Zona MACO, this gallery represents some of the best artists in Mexico, such as Gabriel de la Mora, Jorge Méndez Blake and Yishay Jusidman. Yet another reason to visit: its perfect location in Colonia Roma’s lovely Plaza Río de Janeiro.
Galería López Quiroga
In the heart of Polanco, this gallery boasts two exhibit levels plus two sculpture courtyards. Among the artists, you may recognize names such as Barcelona-born painter Vicente Rojo and Francisco Toledo, Oaxaca’s great painter, sculptor and graphic artist. The gallery also features a small, specialized library, focused on Mexican art and international photography.
Galería Luis Adelantado
Located in an art-packed area of Polanco (near the Jumex and Soumaya museums), this Spain-based gallery represents renowned artists such as Ferrán García Sevilla, Carmen Calvo and Martha María Pérez Bravo, as well as young Mexican talents. Art Basel Miami, the Chicago Art Fair and Paris Photo are just a few of the fairs where it’s been present.
