Barcelona isn’t an expensive city by European, Asian or American standards. That is a major advantgae when it comes to visiting here: a lovely room in a four-star Barcelona hotel won’t cost you any more than an ordinary standard hotel room would in New York City, London, or Paris. Those who want to stay in Barcelona on a budget will find it very easy to book at a four- or even five-star hotel in a good location, for not much more than 125 U.S. dollars per night. And though rates tend to be a little higher during the busy summer season, even then reasonable prices aren’t too hard to find.
Of the best budget hotels in the city, a few are operated by small hotel chains with Barcelona establishments; others are independently run. But all the choices on this list offer good service, nice rooms, and almost all of them include breakfast in their wallet-friendly room rates.
Room Mate Hotels
This great, modern Madrid-based chain has hotels all over Europe that are great for budget travelers; their properties all have nice design (especially the bathrooms), good beds, and friendly staffers. There are two hotels in Barcelona—Emma and Pau—and both are brand new, with good locations. My personal favorite, though, is the Emma, which is just two minutes from Passeig de Gràcia. Rooms here cost about $90 in high season.
This is a very stylish hotel, which offers both a great breakfast and splendid rooms just a few minutes’ walk from Passeig de Gràcia in the city center. If you are visiting Barcelona on a budget and want to get the most for your money, this is the place to try booking first; room rates in high season are usually around $90.
One of the best budget chains in Spain, Petit Palace has four great outposts in Barcelona. At all of them, the beds are comfy, most of the rooms have hydro-massage showers, and the staff is more than helpful. The breakfasts, though, aren’t so great—avoid including them in your rate to get a discount. The high-season rate at my favorite location, La Boqueria, is about $110.
At this four-star boutique hotel, you can enjoy large rooms in with minimalist decor, a chic rooftop terrace with umbrella-shaded tables, and a ground-floor restaurant serving free “mini-brunch” and tea to guests (a bigger breakfast buffet is available for $15). Its location is about five minutes away from the city center on the subway; rooms cost about $100 during high season.
The Banys Orientals
Probably the best hotel in Barcelona when it comes to value, the Banys Orientals combines nice design and awesome rooms with an incredible price and a location (El Born, right near the beautiful Barcelona Cathedral) that is pretty unbeatable. There’s a marvelous restaurant, Senyor Parellada, right next door. High-season room rates are around $85; suites cost about $170.
